PSPI

Precision Scientific Petroleum Instruments (PSPI) was established in 1960 by parent company, Precision Scientific, Inc., founded in 1917 as a manufacturer of high-level laboratory scientific equipment. Since then, PSPI by PAC has become a globally-recognized leader in physical property on-line analyzers. Designed for the global market and area certified for local operating requirements, PSPI systems are scientific online instruments that measure flash point, viscosity and vapor pressure in the process industries. PSPI provides precision instruments for ASTM petroleum tests, as well as related IP and DIN tests including on-line RVP, flash point, and viscosity.

The story of PSPIs success is interwoven with that of the Varlen Corporation, a diversified manufacturing company founded in 1969 that distinguished itself over the years by maintaining a continuous emphasis on industrial products aimed at specialized markets. During the latter half of the 1980s, Varlen began to reposition itself away from an emphasis on metalworking, railroad and heavy industries and focused instead on building a reputation as a manufacturer of precision industrial components for niche markets. In 1988, Precision Scientific, Inc. became a subsidiary of Varlen. The purchase of Precision Scientific, a $30 million manufacturer of research laboratory and petroleum analysis equipment, moved the company more firmly in this direction. At the beginning of the turbulent 1990s, Varlen, like other American businesses, turned to the international marketplace. In 1990, Varlen purchased Walter Herzog GmbH of Germany, the leading manufacturer of automated equipment for petroleum analysis, a sector that was growing worldwide.

Accelerating Growth

In the late 1990s, Varlen’s operations were divided into two sectors: Transportation Products, including railroad and automotive equipment, and Analytical Instruments, including research laboratory and petroleum analysis equipment. In addition to Precision Scientific (now PSPI) and Herzog, Varlen Instruments, Inc. also acquired Alcor and PetroSpec. In 1999, Varlen Instruments merged with ISL. Although the other Varlen analyzer subsidiary companies offered primarily laboratory-based analyzers, PSPIs technology is strictly on-line analyzers installed in refineries and other petroleum processing facilities that perform analysis in real time and in-process.

In 1999, Varlen Instruments ceased to exist as Varlen subsidiaries ISL, PSPI, Herzog, Alcor and PetroSpec all became part of the PAC family of products and technologies. Working together, the dynamic synergy of unique but complementary technologies comprising the PAC family has led to the development of cutting-edge instruments that have been inspired by combining the technological strengths of multiple product lines, benefits and comparative technological strengths.
